About the Artability Workshops  

Eligibility: All Artability workshops are free and open to adults (18+) who have a mental health diagnosis.
Your must register to attend. *ASL interpreter available upon request*

2017 Clay Sculpture, MPLS, Thurs, May 11, 4-6pm
Learn how to sculpt subjects ranging from large to small structures and 3-D subjects with earthenware clay. There will be two clay workshops at each of the Minneapolis and St. Paul Locations. All pieces will be taken to Continental Clay to be fired and you can attend the later class to pick up your piece or paint. All artist levels welcome.

2017 Expressive Weaving, MPLS, Sat May 13th, 1-4pm
In this 3-hour workshop, we will explore basic weaving techniques and practices. We will create colorful free-form weavings with vibrant yarn and fabric. Free form or expressive weaving is often described as relaxing and meditative, because there are few rules. When you arrive, looms will be set up, so that you can have plenty of class time to weave. Beginners and advanced artists welcome.
Note: Artists must register with Artability to attend, because of the limited number of looms

2017 Pastel Paint, MPLS, Mon, May 15, CANCELLED
THIS CLASS HAS BEEN CANCELLED - WE WILL RE-SCHEDULE SOON! The Healing Power of Art - Learn the Fundamental Tools of Creating a Pastel Landscape. We will examine the difference between paintings that merely contains elements of the landscape, and those that strike an emotion…and how to gain some skills necessary to accomplish this. Please bring some landscape photos for reference. This is an all day workshop. We will break a half hour for lunch. There will be snacks and water provided, but please bring something for lunch. Lunch: 12:30pm-1:00pm

Join us for Watercolor classes to learn both basic and advanced watercolor techniques: how to use paint and color by mixing paint and adding water to create memorable works. Continue to learn and grow in your Watercolor abilities. As you learn, you will motivate yourself as you see improvements with each painting. Interaction between teacher and student is encouraged. Instructor Mike Conroy will work with each artist as they have questions and individualize teaching to each artists' level. Beginners and advanced artists welcome.

2017 Art on the Go, MPLS Sat May 20th, 11:30am-2pm
Please join us for Art-A-Whirl, an annual artist open studio tour put on by the Northeast Minneapolis Arts Association. Art-A-Whirl provides us with an opportunity to see inside of hundreds of artist studios to see a diverse array of art work all in one place. It is the largest open studio tour in the country! Although Art-A-Whirl has many buildings open for the weekend-long festival, we will be touring just one of them, The California Building. If you would like to tour additional buildings during the festival you are welcome to do so on your own. The California Building is handicap accessible and has Mojo Coffee on the main floor, so you are welcome to purchase a snack or beverage before or after our tour. We look forward to viewing and discussing the art together as a group!
Note: Please arrive between 11:30 and 12:00. We will do our meet and greet in the main lobby of the California Building from 11:30-12:00. We will explore the building for 2 hours from 12:00-2:00. The main lobby entrance is on California Street and has a sign that says "No Place Like This". The handicap accessible entrance is on the parking lot side of the building.

2017 Art Tour -Walker Art, Sat, June 3, 1130am-2pm
Please join us at the Walker Art Museum to explore the exhibitions and celebrate the grand re-opening of the Walker Sculpture Garden. The Walker Sculpture Garden has been under construction for some time and is opening this summer with new sculptures for us to see! So long as weather permits, we will take two half an hour tours of the garden. The first tour is specific to the garden's newly added sculptures and the second highlights popular works within the garden's entire collection. Should it be a stormy day, we can explore the indoor exhibitions. Walker admission is free the entire day, so you may choose to stay after Artability to explore more of the museum on your own if you wish.
Note: Please arrive by 12:00 noon. Between 11:30 and 12:00 we will meet in the lobby near the Information and Ticket Desk. At 12:00 noon we will begin our walking tour through the gardens.

During this two-day class, artists will create a framed mosaic with guidance from guest mosaic artist, Cynthia. During day one, each artist will receive a framed piece of glass that they will adorn with beautiful pieces of colored glass to create a work of art. On day two, we will add grout to complete the mosaics. Each piece will have eyehooks so that the mosaic can hang in a window. Our mosaics will look particularly beautiful when light shines through them. Beginners and advanced artists welcome.
Note: To participate in this workshop, artists will need to be able to attend both the Thursday and Friday class to complete the mosaic.

2017 Printmaking, Sat, June 10th, 1-4pm
Join us for an introduction to the medium of printmaking. In this class, we will learn about different kinds of printmaking. The majority of the class time will be spent exploring linoleum-cut printmaking, which involves carving an image into a surface and then printing it with ink onto paper. Beginners and advanced artists alike will explore the printing process, use of color, composition, and individual artistic purpose. Note: Artists will need to be comfortable using sharp tools.

2017 Artability tour MIA, Tues, June 13, 3-4:30pm
Please join us at MIA with tour guide Jan Sedgewick. Jan has been giving tours there for 17 years and is still very in love with hosting visitors. The collection of art is quite extensive and there are many themes that can be addressed and discussed. She can tailor a tour to the group's desire, or we can meander the galleries and stop where there is interest. MIA has a website where you can look ahead and decide if there's something specific you'd like to see. Also, there are traveling exhibitions throughout the year, so there's always something new to discover. There will be more Artability On the Go outings and tours with Jan to come!
Note: Please arrive by 3:30. We will meet at the tables in the coffee shop on the 1st floor from 3:00-3:30. The walking portion of the tour will take place for 1 hour from 3:30-4:30. Wheelchairs are available- just ask the front desk when you walk in.

2017 Creative Journaling, Sat, June 17, 1-4pm
In this monthly workshop, artists will explore forms of creative journaling. Each artist will receive an old book that they will reinvent into a journal by covering it with paintings, poems, collage, or drawings. Every week artists will be introduced to a new journaling medium or exercise. The format will provide an open environment for expression and reflection on past, present, and future. Over the course of the workshop, the book will become a work of art from cover to cover. These classes will take place on Saturdays in April. Artists are encouraged to attend all of the classes but not required!
