About the Artability Workshops  

Eligibility: All Artability workshops are free and open to adults (18+) who have a mental health diagnosis.
Your must register to attend. *ASL interpreter available upon request*

Join us for Watercolor classes to learn both basic and advanced watercolor techniques: how to use paint and color by mixing paint and adding water to create memorable works. Continue to learn and grow in your Watercolor abilities. As you learn, you will motivate yourself as you see improvements with each painting. Interaction between teacher and student is encouraged. Instructor Mike Conroy will work with each artist as they have questions and individualize teaching to each artists' level. Beginners and advanced artists welcome.

2018 Creative Journal, Sat, Jan 6, 1-4pm Mpls
In this monthly workshop, artists will explore forms of creative journaling. Each artist will receive an old book that they will reinvent into a journal by covering it with paintings, poems, collage, or drawings. Every week artists will be introduced to a new journaling medium or exercise. The format will provide an open environment for expression and reflection on past, present, and future. Over the course of the workshop, the book will become a work of art from cover to cover. These classes will take place on Saturdays in April. Artists are encouraged to attend all of the classes but not required!

18 - Art on the Go -MIA, Tues, Jan 16, 3-4:30pm
Please join us at MIA with tour guide Jan Sedgewick. Jan has been giving tours there for 17 years and is still very in love with hosting visitors. The collection of art is quite extensive and there are many themes that can be addressed and discussed. She can tailor a tour to the group's desire, or we can meander the galleries and stop where there is interest. MIA has a website where you can look ahead and decide if there's something specific you'd like to see. Also, there are traveling exhibitions throughout the year, so there's always something new to discover. There will be more Artability On the Go outings and tours with Jan to come!
Note: Please arrive by 3:30. We will meet at the tables in the coffee shop on the 1st floor from 3:00-3:30. The walking portion of the tour will take place for 1 hour from 3:30-4:30. Wheelchairs are available- just ask the front desk when you walk in.

2018 Printmaking, Sat, Jan 20th, 1-4pm, Mpls (Sold Out)
Join us for an introduction to the medium of printmaking. In this class, we will learn about different kinds of printmaking. The majority of the class time will be spent exploring linoleum-cut printmaking, which involves carving an image into a surface and then printing it with ink onto paper. Beginners and advanced artists alike will explore the printing process, use of color, composition, and individual artistic purpose. Note: Artists will need to be comfortable using sharp tools.

Come learn the basics of painting with pastels. Learn about the different types of pastels and various ways to use them. We will paint our landscapes using a photograph for reference and inspiration. Photos of landscapes will be provided, but you also may bring photos with your own choice of subject matter. Beginners and advanced artists welcome.

In this 3-hour, hands-on workshop, we will tap into our observational side and create a charcoal drawing. We will learn about the basics of charcoal, including the various materials and techniques used for charcoal drawing. If you are a beginner or think you can't draw- don't worry - you will be guided through step-by-step. Together we will explore observational drawing, composition, measuring, tonal values, material choice and much more. Beginners and advanced artists welcome.

2018 Winter Landscape Painting, Mpls Sat, Feb 10 1-4pm
In this workshop, artists will take inspiration from the winter season. Using acrylic paint, artists will create landscape paintings that focus on depicting white-washed fields and leafless, snow-covered trees. Artists will practice color mixing and will explore how the landscape changes in Winter and how to depict it. Beginners and advanced artists welcome.
